Info about Grenada (History)

Grenada is an island nation in the West Indies of the Caribbean Sea at the southern tip of the Grenadines. Grenada consists of the island of Grenada itself, two small islands, Carriacou and Petit Martinique, and several small islands located north of the main island and part of the Grenadines. It is located northwest of Trinidad and Tobago, northeast of Venezuela, and southwest of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Its size is 348.5 square kilometers (134.6 square miles) and the estimated population in July 2020 was 112,523. The capital is St. George's. Grenada is also known as the "Island of Spices" because it produces nutmeg and mace crops.

Coordinates: 12 ° 07'N 61 ° 40'WB Before the arrival of Europeans in the Americas, Grenada was inhabited by the indigenous peoples of South America. Christopher Columbus witnessed Grenada during his third voyage to the Americas in 1498. French settlement and colonization began in 1649 and continued into the next century, after several failures by Europeans in attempts to colonize the island due to resistance from the inhabitants of the Island Caribbean. On February 10, 1763, Grenada was transferred to England under the Treaty of Paris. British rule continued until 1974 (except for the short French takeover between 1779 and 1783). However, on March 3, 1967, full autonomy was given to the Associated State's internal affairs, and from 1958 to 1962 Grenada was part of the West Indies Federation, a short-lived federation of the British West Indies. did.

On February 7, 1974, independence was granted under the guidance of Eric Gairy, the first Prime Minister of the sovereign state, Grenada. The new country has become a member of the Commonwealth, headed by Queen Elizabeth. In March 1979, the Marxist-Leninist New Jewel Movement overthrew the Gary administration in a bloodless coup and established the People's Revolutionary Government (PRG), primed by Maurice Bishop. The bishop was later arrested and executed by members of the People's Revolutionary Army, prompting a US-led aggression in October 1983. Since then, the island has returned to parliamentary representative democracy and is politically stable.
